When Seeing Red is a Good Thing

Red-Goggles-1
Red-Goggles-3

Every once in a while, Rochester Optical Manufacturing Company gets inquiries from people about vintage military eyewear. Often a family member finds a pair of early glasses in a relative’s drawer, or a curator of military artifacts asks for help to identify an unusual pair of glasses. We frequently receive questions about the glasses with the red lenses, below. And these glasses hold a particularly special place in our company’s—and our country’s—history.

Glasses with red lenses were manufactured by Rochester Optical in the 1940s, and were used by the anti-aircraft gunners to help them see the flaming course of tracer shells during WWII. According to the September 13, 1941 edition of Science News Letter, the red glasses allowed the gunners, who used small-caliber firearms called pompoms, to see the little shells in better contrast against the sky. The article referred to “the red world of war” as the gunners’ literal vision and described the pompoms spitting out “rapid streams of death like over-size machine-guns.”

Aviators during the war also used these glasses because they helped them fly at night, especially when they didn’t have time to sit in perfect darkness before assuming the cockpit. The red lenses helped pilots’ pupils dilate more quickly. That’s because the red tint in the lenses block all colors in the visible spectrum except red. Since the rods in the eyes aren’t sensitive to red, the glasses allow the eyes to adjust to darkness more quickly—a real advantage when timing is everything.

Rochester Optical has supplied our country with specialized eyewear since 1932, and we’re proud to have served the military in all the years since. We began as a lens manufacturer, but are now one of the few remaining frame manufacturers in the country. We still have contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense, and we’re a leading supplier of specialized military eyewear in addition to fashion eyewear and lenses. Today, just as in the past eight decades, we’re focused on delivering continual innovation and dedicated service to our military and civilian customers.

How well do Americans see?

We stumbled on to this infographic that breaks down some vision related numbers in America.  At Rochester Optical we believe that routine eye exams are important, as they can often times provide insight into health problems that may not be vision related, but show symptoms related to our vision.  Some symptoms to take note of would include:

  • blurred vision
  • double vision
  • squinting
  • glare/halo around lights
  • eye strain
  • headache

The U.S. National Library of Medicine describes Strabismus as “a disorder in which the two eyes do not line up in the same direction, and therefore do not look at the same object at the same time.” The condition is commonly known as “crossed eyes.” Symptoms of Strabismus are often intermittent and include crossed eyes, double vision, eyes that do not align in the same direction, eyes that do not move together and vision or depth perception loss. Below are two tales of Strabismus. Eye University: An eye exam can save your life

The following is a guest post from Dr. Tara Vaz, an optometrist at Rochester Optical’s Perinton location.

Rapper Missy Elliott suffers from Graves disease

There are many systemic diseases which can affect the eyes; in fact, an eye exam sometimes leads to the first diagnosis of a systemic disease.  Additionally, patients with known systemic problems may need to have their eyes specifically checked for complications.  During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does more than just determine your prescription for eyeglasses and/or contact lens prescription. He or she will also check your eyes for eye disease and examine your eyes as a gauge of your overall health.

Systemic diseases that commonly affect the eye include Diabetes MellitusHypertension (high blood pressure), Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries),  Thyroid disorder (Graves’ disease), Autoimmune disease (SarcoidosisSystemic lupus erythematosusRheumatoid Arthritis),  and Multiple sclerosis.  Note, these are common diseases that affect the eye and not an exhaustive list.

Eye University: Lenses for Snow Sports

Are you headed skiing or snowboarding soon or know someone who is? Tinted lenses could make your average snow bunny’s snow adventures more fun. Sporting goods company REI has some of the best reasons to wear snow goggles:

-At high altitudes, the air is thinner and filters less ultraviolet (UV) rays.

-The sun’s reflection on snow is brighter and more intense.

-Wind can make your eyes tear and blur your vision.

-Ice particles can get into your eyes, especially when descending fast.

-Twigs and branches can hit your eyes when dropping through the trees.
